Coach Tom Boggs — Founder Austin SLAM 1986

Coach Boggs started the Austin SLAM Program in 1986 when he retired from professional baseball. He was the 2nd overall pick of the 1974 Major League Player Draft by the Texas Rangers. He played professionally for 13 years and pitched for the Atlanta Braves and the Texas Rangers for almost 7 years at the Major League level before an injury to his rotator cuff ended his career.

During his Major League experience he was priviledged to play for  legendary managers such as Jackie Moore, Billy Martin, Bobby Cox, Joe Torre, Bobby Valentine to name a few. He pitched against many notable players such as Willie Stargell, Pete Rose, Rickey Henderson, Nolan Ryan and the list goes on and on. He was a part of the 1982 National League Western Division Championship team with the Atlanta Braves. This same team also set an All-Time start of the season record (which still stands) by recording a 13 game winning streak to start the 1982 season! He considers himself to be blessed at having been able to reach the Major Leagues and be a part of the history of it.

Tommy graduated from Austin Lanier High School in 1974. He was a High School All American in baseball in 1974. He also lettered and received many awards in football, basketball, and track. It has often been stated that Tommy was one of the top All-Around athletes to ever come out of the city of Austin. He was recruited heavily to play college football but eventually chose the baseball route. Tommy was planning to attend the University of Texas to play baseball for Cliff Gustafson before being drafted to play professionally after his senior year of high school.

Tom has been married to his wife Suzette for over 30 years. They have a daughter, Brooke, who graduated from the University of Texas in May, 2005. Their son, Austin, graduated from Texas A&M.

Tommy has spent his life near a baseball field both as a player and a coach. His accomplishments in baseball were recognized by the "Jackie Moore Lifetime Achievement Award" at the Round Rock Express baseball banquet in February 2008.

Tommy Boggs will enter his third season as the head coach of the Concordia University Texas baseball program in 2012. He is the 10th head coach in program history.

In his second year on the sidelines this past spring, Boggs piloted the Concordia program to one of its biggest turnaround seasons in program history. After winning just 15 games in 2010 and being picked to finish sixth among eight schools in the 2011 American Southwest Conference West Division Preseason Poll, the Tornados more than doubled their win total, won a share of the West Division title for the third time in school history and captured their second ASC Conference Championship by knocking off the host school - Texas-Dallas - on its home field twice.

Boggs' squad ended the 2011 campaign by defeating two nationally-ranked opponents at the NCAA West Regional in a span of three days, beginning with a 5-2 upset of then-No. 5 Linfield before being eliminated by Chapman, which fell to Marietta in the national championship game. Concordia's 32 victories in 2011 were the second most in the program's NCAA Division III era, only trailing the 35 wins that were recorded by the 2002 squad. Led by ASC West Division Player of the Year Collin Janssen and ASC West Division Pitcher of the Year Colin Butschek, 11 players received postseason recognition from the ASC. In addition, Concordia finished the season ranked 24th in the final D3baseball.com/NCBWA National poll.
